Love Notes To: Your Guests

Whether you are newly engaged or already making decisions on all of the fine details that will come together to help create your beautiful wedding. Knowing a little about etiquette will be helpful and hopefully this will trigger an idea or answer questions that you may have.

Today's etiquette is not EXACTLY the same as back in the day BUT never the less we still use it or I will dare to say that you will before all is said and done. There are many online resources. I hope this will answer some questions and lead you in the direction that you need to be and save you time and aggravation when it comes to etiquette.

Etiquette= A body of rules of social conduct that tells us what our society considers proper and acceptable behavior. Try to remember these 3 things
common sense
courtesy
and usage

Your Wedding a festive occasion is something that should be personal and bring people together with a lot of "LOVE" remember writing love notes and getting love notes?....the actual notes are a little more personal than email.
Social etiquette will probably be used whether traditional or casual.

If your getting married or in any way part of a wedding, you will probably be faced with social etiquette. What to expect, What dress, etc. Weddings are social events therefore using social etiquette vs. professional etiquette is the way to go. Try to think of your wedding invitation as writing a "Love Note" to each guest...Huh!? Yes a Love Note

MAKE A STATEMENT!

What seems small is really HUGE. Full of DETAIL your invitations are more than just "information." By the information in the invitation your guests should be able to see if they will attending a Beach Wedding, Church Wedding or The Grand Ball Room. Your invitation can be a theme that you will carry out to the end, Ink color can also say, "traditional" (black and white (ecru) or maybe stylish and fashionable "red ink." Regardless, your wedding invitations are a big part of your event. They are not something that is should be decided at the last minute. After all this is your wedding day.

Your Wedding Invitation will say a lot. Create a feeling, a style and give guests a little sneak peak of what is to come

DEFINITELY create a "must attend" status by sending an invitation that you've put your heart into. You will be creating the atmosphere from the very beginning.

Make sure that your invitation does not get tossed with the junk mail! Put some thought into your budget, add your stationary so you will not find yourself down to the wire and JUST realizing the importance of you wedding invitations.

Let your invitations be the Love Note to your guests that will make them want to share this wonderful day with you and your fiance'.

Calligraphy is an Art, many styles, many personalities, many designs, the authenticity that calligraphy "brings to the table" is something that a computer can not create. Every calligrapher is different in their writing styles and every piece that is laid out at your wedding from the invitations, addressing, to the Reception is completely unique in itself. No two will be "exactly" alike.

When you choose to work with a calligrapher for your wedding you are going to be creating an atmosphere from the beginning of what to expect. This is something that will stand out when your invitations are delivered to guests.

Hand addressing invitations? Calligraphy?

I have read a lot of blogs and comments where there seems to be some confusion when it comes to "hand addressed" invitations.

Hand addressing your wedding invitations ARE more personal than using a printer or LABELS. Some of the comments that I have read the person(s) that are absolutely against hand addressing invitations seem sooooo defensive.

In the end, it is your wedding invitations and a B2B can address them however she wants. You don't have to hire a calligrapher to add a little flare to your addressing.

Calligraphy is a beautiful form of art that just seems to make everything come together for some Brides'. That does not mean that you would have to hire a calligrapher.

Hand addressed does not mean calligraphy, however, calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting. I hope for those who read this know that "calligraphy" can be done in sooooo many different ways. For example if you can write in a whimsical style....you've got calligraphy. You are turning letters into beauty and art, or you just have excellent penmanship and your letters just flow perfectly. Try different pens, different colors, even different papers, especially if you are on a tight budget.

Hand addressing is a part of etiquette that A LOT of Brides want to follow. Whether they address the invitations themselves or have them addressed by a calligrapher.

You absolutely can hand address your invitations without having a calligrapher do it. I have read a lot of comments,opinions, etc. where the B2B thinks if the invitations are hand addressed they NEED to be done in calligraphy or a "Fancy" style.

If you have good penmanship, Go 4 it. Have some friends help you, just make sure that whoever addresses the outer envelope is the same person that addresses the inner envelope.

The hand addressing IS for the B2B that WANTS to follow etiquette and make her wedding more personal. Calligraphy does add an elegant touch. Some calligraphers will address your envelopes in a "fancy" style with a regular pen. If you think you might be interested in just "hand addressing" in a "fancy" style definitely look into this.

If it does not matter one way or the other to you how the addresses are put on the envelopes, try not to down the Bride who chooses to do a "traditional" wedding.**Remember if you are going to undergo this task plan for PLENTY of time

Calligraphy is a form of art that some Bride's want to have done. Hand addressing is and can be a form of art. Hand addressing does make it more "PERSONAL" as far as guests go. Envelopes do get looked at by a lot of guests.

Low Budget? You Can Still Have a Calligraphy Wedding

Make sure that the dates you need are available, ask questions, DO NOT be bashful, communication is a good thing.

Decide which aspect of your wedding that you want to add calligraphy. Just because you don't go with "ALL" calligraphy does not mean you unable to have a calligraphy wedding.....you can.

The Emphasis....Do you want your Invitations Addressed?

Do you want program covers?

Would you like to do your reception up? Place Cards, Table Signs, Menus, etc.?

Find a calligrapher, and discuss the calligraphy you want to have done....There are a lot of weddings the same day as yours. Don't wait until the last minute.

The end result should be a beautiful "calligraphy wedding"

Some things to know while you are addressing your invitations whether you are doing it yourself or having a friend do it, or better yet is to have an addressing party if you can not work calligraphy into your budget.

Definitely use waterproof ink or permanent ink so water drops do not ruin your outer envelope.

Hand Address those envelopes....you do want to let guests know that there presence at your wedding is important to you, so make it personal. Hand addressing no matter how you slice it is more personal.

Do not use nicknames (unless you are having a small very non-traditional wedding)

Titles are acceptable: Mr. Mrs. Miss, Ms., Dr. is acceptable however this is a choice that you will have to make when you are writing out your guest list. Your envelopes may not accommodate the lengthy wording.

If you are going to write out Jr., use a lower case "j" i.e. junior.

Make your envelopes classy with wax seals, embellishments, etc.

Remember to STAMP your response envelope

There WILL be MISTAKES, do NOT scratch through it. Use a new envelope and start fresh.

Note**you should always order the additional 25 extra envelopes with your invitationss at the time of purchase.

If you have help addressing, make sure that whoever writes the address on the outer envelope also does the inner envelope too.

If you are going to go with a calligrapher...DO NOT WAIT until the last minute. You will be glad that you took this advice, also a calligrapher can take the stress and worry out of your addressing. .

About Your Wedding Invitations and Etiquette

We now know that your Wedding Invitation is a VERY important part of your SPECIAL DAY! They ARE going to give your guests' an idea of what to expect! You along with your guests' will want to keep your invitation as a keepsake. Friends and Family near and dear to you will not toss something so beautiful that you have put so much in, into the trash.

You may be using enclosures along with your invitations.

Reply Cards, these are an easy way that guests can respond and let you know how many guests to expect. *Another way to add some elegance is to have your guests name handwritten in calligraphy on the response cards. Be sure to add a self addressed , stamped envelope with your reply cards.

Reception Cards would be used to let guests know where the reception is going to be. *If your reception is going to be at the same location as the ceremony you can add the information to your Invitation and you MAY NOT need the reception cards.

If you have a lot of out of town guests you may want to include a Map/Directions Card. You don't have to send this until AFTER the guests have responded.

Other stationary products that you may want to have are:
Thank You Notes- these should be mailed out within 3 weeks. You can use a thank you note as an AT HOME card when possible. Putting your new address on them so guests will know you and your new hubby's address.

Place Cards: Letting Guests know where they will be seated at the reception. Again, these make wonderful keepsakes for guests.
One way to set up your place cards (with the table number on them) is on the way in to the reception, whether it be inside or out.

You may want to have a Seating Chart to let guests know where they will be seated. If you are going to use a seating chart you will want to have a place card at the table setting letting guests know where they are to sit.

If you name your tables, especially if you have a large reception, you can have a nice floor plan of the reception area near the seating chart or place cards to let guests see before they enter into a room and wander around aimlessly. Ha Ha! I went to a wedding where everybody was really confused at the reception. The Bride was frustrated and did not understand why.....There were no place cards, seating chart, usher or anything else to guide guests in the right direction. JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

Deciding and Scheduling

Deciding on having handwritten calligraphy for your wedding, whether for addressing, place cards, table cards,etc. or to have your invitations handwritten is something that is helpful both to you and me if done early. The sooner the better. Calligraphers' are usually REALLY busy during peak "wedding season."
*Call or email me to make sure that the dates that you request are open. Brides' are already scheduling for Spring and early Summer weddings. It is ALWAYS a good idea to check with me (any calligrapher) to find out what you need to do and the time line it will take to complete your job.

*Try not to put your decision on the "back burner" especially if you know that you are going to use calligraphy. It is good to start checking on your calligraphy when you start choosing other vendors. You want to be able to work with someone that you have looked at their work and you like their styles AND make sure that you are going to be able to work together to get exactly what is that you want. In most cases it is NOT a good idea to wait until you pick up your Wedding Invitations to choose to use calligraphy. You want to make sure you get to schedule.

*Try to have a good idea of what you want when you contact me or any calligrapher.

Before the "8 month countdown" your should have already been researching vendors. At 8 months you should be booking certain vendors and meeting with others.
This would be a good time to begin checking on calligraphers! Especially if your Wedding is in the Peak Wedding Seasons. May-October. Check on the calligrapher's "booking" to make sure at 6-7 months you won't be running into, "...those dates are already booked." If your Wedding is in June, you can bet there are a lot of other weddings then.
Some calligraphers book on first come basis, so don't wait. Calligraphy is time consuming and you want to make sure that you get excellent quality calligraphy for your BIG DAY.

Not only does calligraphy add elegance, romance, and unique one of a kind keepsakes for your guests, it will be adding YOUR PERSONALITY to your Wedding Day. Calligraphers have different styles and areas that they specialize in so you want to make sure that, even though your stationer might only know of one calligrapher, you find a calligrapher that suits YOUR STYLE.

Your Guests will be looking at all of the beautiful details from the time that they get that gorgeous invitation! You can add to the addressing of your invitations by having your place cards done in calligraphy. You might want to have Table Names done in calligraphy that goes with the theme from start to finish.

These small things "MAKE BIG STATEMENTS!" Everyone will absolutely LOVE keeping those small place cards with their name on it, or add calligraphy to your favors....Make sure you have a calligrapher that you like and you feel will work with you.

I just wanted to say it was nice talking with all of you and give you some additional information for those of you who are planning on adding that "elegant touch" to your Special Day!

I have already started booking for 2009 weddings, it definitely will be here before you know it. A lot of you have the same wedding dates and some of you have dates VERY close to each other. I have already started booking for May '09. I book everyone on first come basis.

Important to know: You DO NOT have to actually have your Invitations in hand in order to start having your envelopes addressed. After you have picked out your invitation, talk with your stationer and most times you can go ahead and get your envelopes while your invitations are being printed. Timing is very important when you are going to have calligraphy done. You will be glad that you 1. chose calligraphy to add that beauty and unique art to your Special Day and 2. That you chose to have your envelopes ordered early so that they can be getting addressed and ready for you while your invitations are being printed.

Once you know that your envelopes are ordered and I am in the process of addressing them, you can let that part of the stress go since you now know that your envelopes will be ready to stuff and mail.

Calligraphy takes a bit more time than just sitting down with an ink pen and addressing.
Calligraphy is the art of beautiful handwriting..... I not only dip the pen in ink, I can also address your envelopes for you in a beautiful monoline style writing, still adding that class to your Special Day.

     Your Invitation is MORE than just an invitation. It is the "First" official thing that your Guests will see about your Wedding. When your Guest get their invitation in the mail it will let them know the importance of your wedding. They will see if your Wedding is going to be Formal or Informal, also It is VERY IMPORTANT that your invitation stands out from all of the other mail.
     How important is YOUR WEDDING? Very Important! This is YOUR BIG DAY!! You will need to decide whether to add class and elegance to your wedding by having your invitations properly addressed. Will it be casual? Do you want it to be "inviting"? Do you want to create a "MUST ATTEND" status?
     Having your invitations hand addressed in calligraphy definitely will show your guests the importance of your wedding. I like to have enough time to work on your invitations, with GOOD QUALITY, rather than speed. Depending on what font you choose, depends on the length of time it will take to address your invitations.

Prices also depend on the font choice that you choose.

"Monoline" style writing is very quick and still elegant, and it takes the pressure off of you especially if you have a lot of invites.

Italic is a little slower, and beautiful too!

"Pointed Pen" (Copperplate) writing is a much slower process.
